Concerning the chess engine...

Doesn't that depend on what you demand from the chess engine? You could just
implement the rules of chess and a simple greedy, 1-ply evaluation. But I
suspect you are looking for something a bit stronger? If you'd want to implement
the chess-knowledge of a GM in hardware, I suspect you might get a *slightly*
larger chip. :)
