Programs that aren't 'good enough' likely lose on time because the programmer thought other problems were more important to fix first. In tournaments things are different because there is a human that must relay the moves from the engine to the board. The faster the operator is at this, the better his chances are not to lose on time. I am pretty bad at it, so I take precautions when playing a tournament nowadays. -- GCP
