If MATE is 32768 (or whatever) that's not going to be within the 1.5 * pawn margin, or even 1.5 * queen. Maybe for the purposes of doing something like lazy evaluation you can use a margin, but it's not something you can use absolutely. I've only heard that all non-material evaluation is only worth about 0.5 to 1.5 pawns. Maybe that's what you're talking about. Russell
