My evaluation function can return mate score.

If the number of moves of the side to move is 0 then I return 0 or mate in my
evaluation function(0 if the side to move is not in check).

I guess that you search until the king is captured and only after the king is
captured you return mate or stalemate but it is not a general rule for all the
programs.
