Subject: the "kramnik match"

aloha!

while kramnik-DF was going on, it became rather clear during the first 4 games
that fritz was not doing well in simplified positions. some people here
suggested that fritz was "under par" in endgames, when compared to other
engines, and that other programs would have done better in the kind of positions
kramnik was going for.
at that point i got the idea for the "kramnik match", which would be the same
thing as the nunn match, only starting out in those "boring" queenless
middlegames that kramnik used to play against fritz. naturally, i was hoping for
more than 4 positions to start with, but unfortunately (for this purpose), the
fritz team avoided these positions in the later games.
so the "kramnik match" that i propose here is very (too?) short, and probably
only meaningful as a tournament with a couple of engines. i don't have any free
or decent machines to play computerchess with, and i don't have any other
commercial engines except fritz, so i played a tournament with fritz 7, ruffian
1.00, crafty 19.01 and yace berlin on blitz level (4' + 2'') on my P3-450 laptop
with this result (interface: fritz 7, no tablebases, 64MB hash each):

1 Fritz 7 ******** 1½½101½½ ½10110½½ 11½11½11 16.5/24
2 ruffian 0½½010½½ ******** ½0½½1½1½ 011½0101 12.0/24
3 Crafty 19.01 ½01001½½ ½1½½0½0½ ******** ½01½1½½½ 11.5/24
4 yace 00½00½00 100½1010 ½10½0½½½ ******** 8.0/24

i've pasted the PGN file i used for the match at the end of the post - i just
started off at the point where the queens were exchanged in games 1-4.

obviously, a blitz tournament (and on a slow machine on top!) is not too
meaningful, and 24 games is not very much. but perhaps some of you have more
computer resources, more experience with computer tournaments, and more
(commercial) engines to give this a try!

if i had to conclude anything at all from this tournament i would say that fritz
doesn't look bad at all, winning overall, and winning every single individual
match...

cheers
  martin
