There was a discussion on freeware that I'd like to revive a little. Regarding freeware, I think that our Computer Chess Page (unfortunately not readily accessible due to reconstruction now -- but will be available beginning of the next week :))) has useful data: personal observation, comments and descriptions of programs. There's also a provisional rating list, based on blitz games; soon rapid levels will be included as well as some new programs. The very first report and list, Sept. 10, 1998: atabase:FREEWARE *** Complete overview *** Name Tot Score + « - Perc Old Oppo New ArasanX 10 0.5 - 9.5 0 1 9 5% 2150 2250 2144 Comet 44 31.5 - 12.5 29 5 10 71% 2400 2350 2404 Goliath 111 48.5 - 62.5 45 7 59 43% 2250 2285 2253 Patzer 34 23.0 - 11.0 21 4 9 67% 2370 2250 2374 Phalanx 118 46.0 - 72.0 39 14 65 38% 2350 2425 2352 TCB 60 35.0 - 25.0 34 2 24 58% 2370 2250 2374 Wcrafty 25 14.0 - 11.0 13 2 10 56% 2450 2350 2444 Zchess 32 18.5 - 13.5 17 3 12 57% 2250 2250 2243 Crafty is on top, followed by Comet, Patzer/The Crazy Bishop (Wcrafty 15_18, Comet A.95, Patzer 2.99zp, TCB0037). Hardware used: AMD-K6 3D/300, 128 MB RAM. Wcrafty, Patzer and Zchess used all 3 and 4 piece tablebases. Patzer had at its disposal the 5 piece EGDBs by K. Thompson. Winboard 4.0.0 was the venue. The provisional initial ratings were deduced on the basis of programs' play on the servers and personal observations prior to testing. Not much off target, I am pleased to say. The page: http://www.filfak.ni.ac.yu/Org/Cchess/ In case the page is not accessible right away, do try later. A much faster and reliable mirror site will be set up next week. I'll keep you posted. Regards, Djordje
