Go up one level in this thread
I'd definitely go along with Andrew's comments.
Very fresh style, like 'One Jump Ahead', bring out the human story of the
engineers behind Deep Blue. A good read
.
'One Jump Ahead' was, in its turn, likened to Tracy Kidder's 'The Soul of a New
Machine' in one review I saw.
Light on information about the software side, which is still under IBM-wraps I
believe, but maybe we can expect IBM to be more liberal with the information in
the near future.
The IEEE_Micro and recent AI papers go into more of the technicalities, and its
worth looking for papers by Gerard Tesauro who had experience of tuning
evaluation functions with TD_Gammon.
Interestingly, CB Hsu mentions three tournaments in 1988 which contributed to
DEEP_THOUGHT being awarded the Intermediate Fredkin Prize, but only 3 ( /12 from
the US Open, Boston) of probably 24 have appeared above my horizon.
... All information invited about the USCF Open (Boston, 1988) - and the two
tournaments mentioned on p80 of BDB, namely:
- the American Open, Los Angeles, CA October 8-10, 1988
possibly confused in some sources with the Software Toolworks Championship
- the US Class Championship, Somerset NJ, October 28-30, 1988
There's also a whole stack of contributions in the ICCA Journal Vols 10-18 and
possibly more ... and these will shortly be listed on the ICGA website,
www.icga.org. These give commentaries on many games that didn't find enough
room in the book.
