That isn't terrible. The original 400mhz xeons were pricey if you went to the 2048K L2 cache size, they were around $5,000. When I bought these 1M L2 700 mhz processors, they were 1300 bucks each and the 2M versions were around $3,000. Seems that the L2 cache size is a big contributor to pricing. Or, more realistically, Intel believes these will end up in large servers where they can get a bigger slice of the financial pie. :)
