My impression is that all modern chess engines are very similar to each other, using well-known search algorithms which you can read about on the Internet. They seem to differ only in subtle differences in individual programming styles and tricks. A few chess engines seem to play differently from "the rest of the pack," although this may be just an illusion. For example: How does the software differ between two programs playing with distinctly different styles? Is it just a matter of tweaking a set of well-known parameters? Or are there real differences between the programs? If so, what? In summary: Is there room for new software which is significantly different? Or, are all engines essentially "variations on the same theme?" Bob D. P.S. Hope I didn't offend anybody.
