It can use named pipes or TCP/IP or a myriad of other available protocols. The beauty of that project is that it encapsulates common needs into a single API, so that the programming is identical on all platforms. It even offers extremely high level tools like a basic server and a basic client [Using a model where the server can be active! Think of how often you have wanted that!] and a basic HTML server (JAWS) and a number of additional high level tools. If the programing paradigm is ACE, then the code can be reused on any standard platform. If you have never looked up the ACE project, have a look at: http://www.cs.wustl.edu/~schmidt/ACE.html
