I read through several pages of links from that search, and found only one other
MENTION of 4/8 way K7 machines. Supposedly a company called 'HotRail' was
developing such chipsets, but they were bought out by Conexant in June 2000.

There is nothing even remotely resembling a 'promise' from AMD about 4/8 way SMP
systems that I could find.

I also tried searching for K7 SMP, which didn't turn up anything useful (99% of
the links are about the Linux kernel patches or such).

I can imagine that Compaq's official killing of Alpha might have had something
to do with 4/8 way k7 boards not being built, since K7 uses the same bus as
Alpha EV6, and there was supposed to have been the prospect of sharing
motherboard designs. But this is speculation.
