This question is LIMITED to trying to understand the technical impacts of the choice of operating system on the strength and overall performance of chess engines. I understand that no chess programmer would create his/her own operating system simply because it would take too much time. Rewards not worth the cost. But, from a purely theoretical viewpoint, I am curious as to how much currently available operating systems [including DOS] slow down or weaken the chess engines. [A few chess engines are still running under DOS. Not clear why. Could it be that DOS provides some slight advantage in terms of engine performance?] Suppose someone were to offer a GURU chess programmer $1,000,000 to produce an operating system dedicated to supporting a specific chess engine. Suppose the programmer did that and collected his money. Would the engine perform significantly better using that dedicated operating system? [As compared to using a commercially available OS] Bob D.
