What makes other programs look "professional" in my eyes compared with
Chessmaster and Powerchess?

Well, to begin with, other chess programs don't destroy your system setup if you
install them (as has been reported about PC and I have experienced myself with
CM 5000).

Other programs at least don't crash while I play against them - with "mass
market" programs this doesn't seem quite reliably to be the case.

Other programs run fine under Windows NT and support PGN in a reasonable way.

If playing strength were my concern, I would only be too happy to take any de
Koning or Kittinger engine any day. But they would have to satisfy at least a
minimum requirement of running without crashes for some hours and a few of the
"professional" bells and whistles of Fritz 5 or Rebel 10 ...
