It was my understanding that Capablanca suggested that two pieces be added, an Archbishop which combines the moves of Bishop and Knight, and a Chancellor, which combines the moves of Rook and Knight. The board would therefore be 10x10. Pawns would initially have a three-square move. See http://www.chessvariants.com/large.dir/capablanca.html I like his idea, since it's now possible to "double Bishops" - the Archbishop can now switch the colour of the square it's on. I remember reading, though, that Capablanca later regretted having said that Chess was stagnant, having later in life discovered a new depths to the game. But your comments really struck a chord. Maybe things have changed a lot since Capa's time. Mike.
