There is a variant of chess called "crazyhouse" in which captured pieces can return to the board. I play it on the chess servers; it's fun! Now, making this relevant to this board, there may easily be hundreds of legal moves. Heck, if there's just 2 kings left there's 930 legal moves ( if all pawns got promoted and were captured ). Could a program do well? However, there will be a ton of alpha-beta cutoffs in crazyhouse. And nullmove would be a great hueristic, since the side to move typically has a huge advantage. hmmm dave
