Write a program that says "hello world". Write a very simple Loebner-Prize type thingy. Write a program that plays connect 4 (or connect 5? or 6?). Write one that wins RK vs. R ending. Then come back worrying about languages. Now write a chess program. Then come back worrying about compilers.
