This makes finding a forced mate pretty difficult. I forced the line 1.Nf6 gxf4 2.Nxe8+ Kh6 3.Nxc7 f3, and CM9000 did not find a mate in under six minutes on my P3-733. At this point, there are two moves, Bxd4 and Bg4 that don't lead to a quick mate. However, Bxc4 (the move that CM chooses in this position) appears to lead to the forced line: 4.Bxd4 cxd4 5.Bg4 f2+ 6.Kf1 Bd3+ 7.Be2 Bxe2+ 8.Kxe2 d3+ 9.Kxd3 f1=Q+ and, even from THIS position after the promotion, 18 plies away from the initial position: [D]8/2N5/1p5k/4P3/1PP4b/3K4/7P/5q2 w - - 0 10 CM9000 does not quickly find a forced mate: Time Depth Score Positions Moves 0:00 1/3 -6.60 1975 10.Kd4 Bf2+ 11.Kd5 Qd3+ 12.Ke6 Qxc4+ 13.Nd5 0:00 1/4 -7.34 10043 10.Kd4 Qf3 11.c5 Bf2+ 12.Kc4 Qc6 13.Nb5 Qe6+ 14.Kd3 Qxe5 0:00 1/5 -7.34 34853 10.Kd4 Qf3 11.c5 Bf2+ 12.Kc4 Qc6 13.Nb5 Qe6+ 14.Kd3 Qxe5 0:01 1/6 -7.70 103440 10.Kd4 Qf3 11.c5 Bf2+ 12.Kc4 bxc5 13.b5 Qe4+ 14.Kb3 c4+ 15.Kb4 c3+ 16.Kb3 Qxe5 0:02 2/7 -8.67 190660 10.Kd4 Qf3 11.c5 Bf2+ 12.Kc4 bxc5 13.b5 Qe4+ 14.Kb3 Qb7 15.e6 Qxc7 0:08 3/8 -9.21 780295 10.Kd4 Qf3 11.c5 Bf2+ 12.Kc4 bxc5 13.e6 Qf4+ 14.Kd5 Qxc7 15.bxc5 Qxc5+ 16.Ke4 Kg6 0:26 4/9 -9.48 2595736 10.Kd4 Qf3 11.c5 Bf2+ 12.Kc4 bxc5 13.e6 Qf4+ 14.Kd5 Qxc7 15.bxc5 Qxc5+ 16.Ke4 Qh5 17.h3 Qxh3 1:26 5/10 -9.66 8747378 10.Kd4 Qf3 11.c5 Bf2+ 12.Kc4 bxc5 13.bxc5 Qe4+ 14.Kb5 Qb7+ 15.Kc4 Qxc7 16.Kd5 Qxc5+ 17.Ke4 Bg1 18.e6 Bxh2 5:18 6/11 -9.85 33510158 10.Kd4 Qf3 11.c5 Bf2+ 12.Kc4 bxc5 13.bxc5 Qe4+ 14.Kb5 Qb7+ 15.Kc4 Qxc7 16.Kd5 Qxc5+ 17.Ke4 Bg1 18.e6 Qd4+ 19.Kf5 Qd5+ 20.Kf6 Qg5+ 21.Kf7 Qg7+ 22.Ke8 Bxh2 jm
