If you are adverse to using assembler, you may want to investigate the article, "Using de Bruijn Sequences to Index a 1 in a Computer Word," which can be found here: http://citeseer.nj.nec.com/leiserson98using.html. I haven't tried it, but the authors seem to think it is an improvement on other methods.
