White to move and win: [d] 8/6N1/K2k3B/4p3/8/p7/2PP4/8 w - - 0 1 This is from Pal Benko, an improvement on a study by L. Kubbel. It was in the current issue of Chess Life magazine. How long until your program sees the entire win, at least up to and including White's 5th move? Strong programs like Fritz on a modern PC will get this one very quickly. But I think it's an interesting puzzle for humans and for weaker PCs/programs or for handhelds. On my 66 MHz Sony Clie (Palm OS), it took Chess Tiger about 39 or 40 seconds to see the full win (it saw the correct first move and thought White was winning several times before that, but the lines it saw would actually have LOST for White had any of them been played).
