Lurkers can do real damage whereas, without such a feedback system, they merely ... lurk. I write as someone with scars on my back from a previous experiment along those lines :) I would hardly say there are "floods" of idiotic messages. Maybe a small trickle; if you want to see a far greater proportion go to rec.games.chess.* I've been there over the past couple of weeks - first time since about four years ago - and am amazed to see the same minority of people posting the same nonsense now as then.
