There's more to bitboards than first meets the eye, Bob. It will take you "A
While" to really "get" the subtleties involved.

That being said, 0x88 may be more to your liking, or perhaps some combo of the
old and something new that hasn't been thought of yet.

What do you like when you look at various source code programs?
Have you peeked at Gerbil's code?

I've seen a few that I just really don't like (TSCP for one), and I've seen a
few that I really LIKE. (Beowoulf)

Now TSCP is fine, it's just I don't think like Tom (the author), who's very
experienced at chess programming, (he had already written a very strong program
before he wrote TSCP), and so he whipped up TSCP in a few hours.

Once you look at several programs, you'll find out which idea's you like and
don't like, and then you've got a compass for where you want to go, with your
own program.

Good luck,

David

P.S.
I wouldn't fear the "dark ages" arising from bitboard usage, just yet.
