 I assume that it is the programmer the only persong who has a say about if the
engine has to resign in presumably lost positions. After all, that could be
taken as part of the "individual personality" of as engine. Like liking knights
more than bishops or the like. Among human players, some are more prone to
resign than others, and usually nobody dares to criticize that mood. Savielly
Tartakower once wrote that "no chess game has been won by means of resignation"
and often he was mated.
