Subject: Endgame test position L Portisch - J Nunn, London, 1982

Author: Matthew Barnett

Date: 20:33:18 11/22/02

[D]8/8/pp1p1n2/2pPnkp1/P1P5/2B1K2P/4B3/8 w - - 0 49

Black is already struggling and, according to Nunn's own extensive analysis, any
move by the e2 bishop is a 'tactical error' that will end White's campaign
because of ...Nxc4 or ...g4 or 49 Bd3+ Nxd3 50 Kxd3 Ne4 51 Be1 Kf4. Nunn
suggests White's best defensive ploy is 49 Bb2 to keep the black-square bishop
on the long diagonal to cover e5. Counter-attacking with a5 weakens White's
position and hastens his demise.

Nunn doesn't analyse Bd2 which looks worthy of some investigation.

What does your (favourite) engine say for White's 49th move?
