Losing on purpose, which IS what you did, is a form of cheating. It invalidates the ratings of anyone that you played, and defeats the purpose of the rating system. It can also be called "sandbagging", which is an attempt to lower your own rating so that you can be placed in lower-strength tournaments, and then easily win because you are actually a much stronger player than your rating suggests. If you hadn't been playing rated games, then it wouldn't have mattered. And, besides, nobody wants to play someone who is trying to lose. IMO, you deserved it. jm
