Hello Brian,
All you need to make the two play vs each other is the null modem cable.  You
have to tell each program which com port you are connected to so they can
communicate via that port.  This is done inside each chess program like
Fritz/Junior etc.
You can pass files from one PC to the other via the null modem cable but it's
slow.  I think to really set up a network you need to get some network cards and
go that route but maybe someone else can explain that.
