What are the permissions on book.bin and books.bin?  book.bin _must_ be
rw for the owner...

For the moment, forget xboard and cd to the above directory and type
"crafty"

and see if it complains about the book somehow...  It is binary data.  When
you downloaded did you use binary mode? If not that will corrupt it.
