Subject: DJ v GK: The Most Important Computer Chess Game In History

Author: Graham Laight

Date: 01:10:08 11/27/02

Starts on Monday. I hope there will be some good free coverage somewhere.

There are many possible outcomes - and I can't choose amongst them:

* Gary thrashes DJ. Quite likely - Amir isn't as clever as Frans (look at the
way he allowed Kramnik to make him look silly with such an easy victory with the
Stonewall attack at Dortmund), and I assume he doesn't have Alex Cure (called
"the fox" by Robert Hyatt) to help him with any opening problems Gary exposes.

* DJ outplays Gary. Unlikely (Gary will have been working with the latest copy
of DJ and will know what its game is like) - but not beyond the bounds of
possibility

* Repeat of GK v DB 96

* Repeat of GK v DB 97 (though hopefully Gary will have learned to react in a
more mature way if DJ plays unexpectedly well in a particular game)

* mostly (or all) draws

* many other possibilities

I think that Gary will be able to beat DJ. If this happens, then the possibility
remains open that DB 97 really was much stronger than PCs will be for a long
time.

If DJ wins, it will be more difficult to make the case that DB 97 will remain
much stronger than PCs for a long time to come.

Looking forward to next week!
