The ultimate unanswerable question ... ! First of all, on any handheld (even the most feeble PalmOS one) the important programs (Tiger, Genius, Pocket Fritz, Pocket Grandmaster, PocketChess, whatever) will be at least 2000-2100 Elo and, in the case of PocketPCs, much more than that. So, unless you're a strong player, playing strength is not an issue. Merely buying a handheld for playing chess is a bit silly as they can do so much more*, so I suppose it comes down to what you want the machine for other than playing chess; the only way to decide is to try out both PalmOS and PocketPC machines if you can. After various excursions into both types I've come back to a Palm Zire, of all things; its huge battery life (2-3 weeks) more than outweighs the low resolution and slow processor when I'm away a lot as I don't have to carry either a second charger or pocketfuls of batteries :) http://www.palm.com/products/handhelds/zire/ Alastair * if you intend to only play chess, the Kasparov Cosmos is worth considering: http://www.saitek.com/chess/uk/consur.htm
