Subject: Crafty UCI Revisons #2

Author: Mike Byrne

Date: 19:15:51 12/01/02

Note - what follows is an email update to the beta testers. I'm still lokking
for Crafty UCI beta testers. This was emailed dto all beta testers, so if
you're a beta tester and you are reading this for the frist time - check your
email. I e-mailed a new crafty executable and *eng files.

Requirements :

Fritz 7 or Shredder 6 installed with the patch to add UCI engines.
Experienced UCI engine installer in the Fritz 7 enviroment.
Familiarity with running Crafty under winboard enviroment.

I have made some revisions-

First I added "search depth" and "delay move" to the option list.
Search depth is self-explanatory, Delay move is a command that I added to
crafty can be used in conjunction with "search depth". For example, say you
want to play crafty sd=5. On today's fast computers it will move almost
instantaneously. That's not how normal human to human games are played. Check
the delay move, and it will still continue to stop searching @ search depth 5
(if you set it that way), but it will not move instantly. It will use the the
allocated time as if it was still thinking, Giving you the player a more human
like simulation for you to ponder on the opponents turn. This it will provide
you with a better practice enviroment at longer time controls, if you don't wish
play Crafty full strength at the 2500+ level at the longer time controls.

I would guess SD 5, at slow time controls would be at the expert+ level or so,

The pesonality (SE)*.eng file ws not working as it should, I enclose an update.

I also modified the crafty executable to accept the normal extensions parameters
for Crafty. Normal Crafty does not have a 99% limitation on extensions - it
goes to 100%. To do this, I added new commands in Crafty to accept the raw
format of the extension values. Crafty extensions are actually based on Crafty
constant INCPLY which is equal to 60 and equals one ply. To match this, I am
using an extension scale of 0-60. A value of 60=100% (60/60) extension. A
value of 45= 75% extension(45/60). The *eng files are updated for the changes
mentioned.

The above change requires an updated exectuable. There are no other changes to
modified Crafty so it is not being email to my current "modify crafty
distribtion list" unless you specifically requested.

If you are interested in being a Fritz 7/ Carfty UCI beta tester . Please send
me an email (mfbyrne_pa@msn.com)with the words "beta tester" in the subject
header.
