I have slightly sub-normal vision, so the look and feel of the board are very important to me. I even bought a 21 inch monitor. The problem that I have with some programs are .... 1. Too small of a board. Some programs want to put a lot of information above and below the board, which reduces the size of the board. (i..e Master Chess 98) 2. Too many colors. i.e. Chess Master 4000 colors give the pieces some "depth" even on the 2D board, but I think that the color choice makes the pieces look too much alike. Personally I think that brown is a terrible color for a chessboard and pieces. 3. Most 3D boards are useless. The exception is that the Fritz5 3D board looks better than most that I have seen, but I still prefer to play 2D. Fritz 5 has an option of a blue an grey board, called "cool." I like it very much.
