I was doing a little web research, trying to find if there are any chess programs using the .NET Framework. I was particularly interested in Visual Basic .NET. A Google search of the terms "VB.NET chess" led me to a book titled "Debugging VB .NET Development" by Mark Pearce. What was interesting to me was the author's bio which stated: "In a previous life, Mark was a professional chess player who paid for his chess-playing bugs with near-starvation." A professional chessplayer?? Who is this guy? He's not in the USCF Rating database. And if he's a VB .NET guru, why not be a pioneer and write the first chess engine using the .NET Framework. (BTW, is anyone doing this?) I'm a very green wannabe programmer working my way thru "Beginning VB.NET". Programming a chess engine is sure to be beyond my capabilities for at least a few years. However, I plan to take a stab at another chess-related programming project... a Winboard and UCI-compatible GUI written in VB.NET. I hope to incorporate all the features of Winboard into a GUI with a US Chess Live look-and-feel. Wish me luck!
