If you have to go with a Microsoft OS, Win95 and Win98 are difficult to tolerate
as they crash frequently. In my experience, Windows 2000 is pretty stable. XP,
based on my 1 year with it, is no more reliable than Windows 2000 though it does
boot much faster. Given what Microsoft is doing with licensing and XP, I would
suggest you go with Win 2000. Of course, Microsoft will force us all to upgrade
to .NET someday ...

The only real hope is Linux ... but that is a ways off for chess fans that want
commercial products on that platform. Crafty runs great as do Yace and some
others, but for those that want Fritz, Junior, Hiarcs, etc. ... that day may
never come, sadly.
