Since you didn't mention the platform, I assume you mean Windows. (I hope I live
to the day where this default is not true anymore) As others mentioned, there
are (free) ways to play on chess servers under Windows with an UCI-engine. There
is no way under anything different than Windows though. For some people (approx
5%) this is an issue.

And as you've heard from others, the design of both protocols are somewhat
different. [ok, completely different]
