Last night I wondered how important a transposition table is in a chess program. I played a small match with CM6000 (only thing I have here, I'm out of town). I created one personality that uses a transposition table, and one that doesn't, both with ponder off, and all other settings the same. The personality that uses the transposition table won 7.5-2.5, scoring +5 -0 =5. So it looks like, all other things being equal, the transposition table is a significant advantage. I'd like to run some more tests when I get back hom where the engines are not equal. For example, play Crafty or Yace w/ transposition table vs. Fritz w/ no transposition table, and see how much it affects things. How much do you think this would affect the outcome of a match? Would a top engine like Fritz still be better than an engine like Crafty or Yace even without a transposition table? Russell
