I propose we add a "ready" command to the protocol. The engine would use this command to inform the interface that it's ready to play. Quite often when an engine starts up it may take a few seconds to initialize its transposition table or perhaps the system might thrash the disk for half a minute. This causes a problem using winboard for instance--my program typically loses 5 seconds on the clock at the start of a game or match. Between games there might be activity going on (updating of learning database, saving of game, or whatever) which would necessitate a delay of some sort--winboard handles this by introducing a delay of a few seconds...a far better solution is to have a "ready" command. -Dan.
