GCP, >>1).Is Shredder known to be weaker in tactics? > >Compared to other professional engines, Shredder 6 was >a slow tactician. In Shredder's defence I think this is a bit of a myth. The early versions of Shredder (v 1 - 3) were considerably slower than other tactical monsters (e.g. ChessMaster and Fritz) at test suites. As a result Shredder has always been regarded as a positional player and not a tactician. The latest versions seem to be extremely good at tactics - maybe not the absolute best but I personally don't think tactics can be regarded as Shredder's weakness. Thorston made the "Shredder is not good at tactics" statement a while back and I challenged him to find a competitive game where Shredder lost due to a tactical oversight - he said he would look but hasn't got back to me! IMHO Shredder 6 is one of the most rounded engines available! Regards, Steve Maughan
