I made a provision in Queen 2.35 (the version with its own GUI; not the WinBoard version queen-wb) to show its evaluation of a position: just enter Ctrl+U, enter a position by dragging pieces (or by loading a position) and press the space bar. Then two numbers appear on the screen: the material score for White and the positional score for the side to move. These values are computed without making any moves (that is, without analysing any variations). I use this quite often to test my evaluation function and to check if the the scores for white is the same as that for black after replacing a position by its opposite (changing white pieces by black ones etc.).
