I made a provision in Queen 2.35 (the version with its own GUI;
not the WinBoard version queen-wb)
to show its evaluation of a position: just enter
Ctrl+U, enter a position by dragging pieces (or
by loading a position) and press the space bar.
Then two numbers appear on the screen:
the material score for White and the
positional score for the side to move.
These values are computed without making any moves
(that is, without analysing any variations).
I use this quite often to test my evaluation
function and to check if the the scores for
white is the same as that for black after
replacing a position by its opposite
(changing white pieces by black ones etc.).
