The files are > 2.0 gigabytes, and would be impossible to address using a
traditional
signed int (32 bit) file offset.  Eugene chose to break the file up into chunks
of < 2.0
gigs each, rather than limiting users to either 64 bit architectures, or C
libraries with
64 bit file offset pointers (which requires O/S support).
