"Most of the stuff we think of as smart is based on experience."

I could have told them that. It's also a lot of luck. I remember when I learned
algebra, I saw a few patterns that I could apply to almost any algebra problem.
Maybe it was pure luck that the light bulb went on in my mind when I recognized
those patterns. As a result I was seen as "smart". What if I had been sick that
day the light bulb went on in my head and didn't attend school that day? What if
my friend threw a paper airplane across the room when the teacher wasn't looking
and I lost my train of thought, and algebra never "clicked" in my brain? Maybe
those people in that class wouldn't have thought I was so smart. So, does being
"smart" involve a lot of luck? I think so.
