Subject: Best free prog, better than best comercial of now, When?

Just interested to know the likely correct estimate to such a question.
When will a free program be stronger than everything which is now comercial?

Or, you could also ask it regarding the past. When did the first commercial
program get as good as what Ruffian (or Crafty, or whatever is strongest, now),
and which program and version is that? And how long between them?

I know that some people prefer free programs, and maybe they have a point, if
all they have to do is wait two years, and they have something stronger for
free, anyway! Unless their need is urgent.
