There was an article a week or two ago about a Russian website that used AthlonMP 2400 systems in its upgrade. They're available -now-. You can already order the chips from vendors off of pricewatch, and they're not preorder. With Barton and Opteron right around the corner, it's not terribly exciting news, though. Barton will bring a 512 KB L2 cache to the Athlon. Those who saw the performance of the original P4 Williamette compared to the P4 Northwood know the difference 256 KB of cache can make, particularly at high clock speeds. Opteron/Clawhammer will be 25% faster in 32-bit performance than Athlon at the same clock speed. When compiled for 64-bit, virtually all applications will benefit beyond that. Chess engines stand also to benefit from the 64-bitness. -Matt
