Of course, OS X comes with a graphical version of GnuChess out of the box. Sigma chess is the strongest of the shareware native OS X programs. It is featureful and pretty. The strongest available is probably crafty (get the latest version, download the free Apple dev tools, and compile the "netbsd" configuration). Crafty is also the only available program which will take advantage of the dual processor G4s (though you need to modify the Makefile; see my message from yesterday). Since OS X is Unix based, you can also run X Windows and XBoard, to get a graphical front end for chess engines such as crafty. No one has ported XBoard to run natively in Aqua on OS X yet. You can also run older Mac programs in Classic, such as MacChess, HIARCS, and ChessMaster. Also, it is rumored that Christopher Theron is interested in porting Tiger to OS X. Ian
