1 Ghz Pentium  1 GB RAM  single processor

Fritz 8:

Hash: 256

Kn/s < 400 middlegame

Was close to 500 in Fritz 7.  Was even higher in 5.32.

What is wrong?

It'll take forever to get to any reasonable search depth.

Is the position evaluation all that much better?
