On-board RAID is shabby, and current on-board Serial ATA controllers are just
Parallel ATA controllers using a conversion chip which limits speed. It's nice
if you want to get Serial ATA drives now so they're not obsolete later on,
though.

I use a 3ware Escalade ATA RAID controller, and even the low-end boards have
higher throughput than the on-board RAID controllers. The 7000-2 is about $125.
Bigger, better models get expensive very quickly. The 7500-4 is the controller I
would like to have, but it costs about $250. I have a 6410 card which cost $100,
but I can't find them on the market anymore.
