My 1 GHz computer has 1 gig of RAM and it allows about 288 MB for the hash table. But I have a "sneaking suspicion" that it's best to set the hash table size to a power of two. Hence I use 256 MB. My use is for analysis, with the computer thinking several minutes per move. Is it really necessary to use a power of two? I don't know. Obviously, the optimal size of the hash table depends on the speed of your computer and what you use it for. If you have a slow computer and use it to play blitz chess, then not much hash at all is needed. Bob D.
