Here is a small example of what really happens:
1. move e1d1
2. move d1e1
3. move e1d1
4. move d1e1
5. move e1d1
As you can see move number 1 was repeated three times counting itself, so you
can not confuse it with moving another piece to the same squares as it only
counts when you move the same piece.
As far as promoting a piece, you can not undo the promotion so you can not
replicate the move as illustrated above.
