I have copies of these articles too, and they were very helpful when I started
chess programming.

Have you seen the articles by Peter Frey and Larry Atkin in Byte Oct, Nov and
Dec 1978 and Jan 1979.

Oct 1978 is an introduction to chess programming. Nov and Dec 1978 are a
working program, Chess 0.5, in PASCAL (albeit rather dated now). Jan 1979 looks
to the future and IMHO is still not entirely out of date. I have tried some of
the ideas on goal-directed search and they do have some positive effects.
