I ran a few 20-game matches with Arasan 6.2 against other programs. This was on a PIII/733 (not a high-end machine, but what I had available). All programs had 32MB hashtables, and (if applicable) access to 3- and 4-man tablebases. Time control was 40 moves/40 minutes. Results: Arasan 6.2 versus: score: Arasan 5.4 +7 -3 =10 Delfi 3.3 +7 -6 =7 Tao 5.4 +6 -10 =4 Sjeng 12.13 +6 -9 =5 Overall, not very surprising. Sjeng and Tao appear to be somewhat stronger than Arasan. Delfi is also a good program, but didn't do quite as well. The result against Arasan 5.4 (last years' version) is interesting. Arasan 6.2 has several advantages against this version: it has a better book, uses tablebases, has more effective book and position learning, and has a somewhat more aggressive style. I'm not sure which of these is most significant, however. Match games are available at http://www.arasanchess.org/matches.zip. --Jon
