I do agree that a program that is using its book to destroy its opponents may not reflect the true strength of that program. However, i feel that my point has not been made.....sorry :)So here ill try to explain what i mean. Lets have every test involve the use of the same book, or a chosen set of openings without the use of book learning. Therefore we can see what programs handle the classical openings best. You mentioned that you have seen Chessmaster suffer do to it's opening book. I agree as i have also seen this happen and have crushed chessmaster in the opening myself. My point is that even though chessmaster was out of book after 10 moves, Chessmaster was able to achieve the basic formation of a Sicilian, Ruy Lopez, QGA, QGD, Slav, Guicco Piano, Catalan, ...etc ...etc. I guess what im saying is we should test computer's using the hundreds of years of opening knowledge, that us humans have created with our infinite GREY MATTER.... Of course this is the view of a openings freak that spends 3 hour a day learning just openings. Take it all with a grain of salt! Cheers~ :)
