Subject: Shredder 7 - Review and Advice needed

Dear Readers,

Please try to contain your laughter, but I have an announcement to make.

Most of you know that I'm probably the least-knowledgable computer chess poster
in the history of this message board. However, as a correspondence chess player
and reviewer at ChessCafe.com, I've volunteered to review Shredder 7 for
ChessCafe.com. While I know next to nothing about chess programs (and computers,
for that matter!), perhaps I have that in common with the average purchaser of
such programs. :-)

My review will focus primarily upon Shredder 7's playing strength, testing it
against various positions from my correspondence career. I also plan to test
Shredder 7 on some of the positions from my infamous matches with Fritz 6a and
Nimzo 7.32.

As such, I'll focus on the GUI and peripheral stuff to a lesser extent.
Therefore I'd appreciate any advice on what you believe is important for this
review. Some of you have expressed an interest in purchasing Shredder 7, so
please let me know what information from the review would influence your
decision, one way or another.

A few days ago, somebody asked what Shredder 7's engine size is. Its 86,016
bytes. Would somebody please tell me how that compares to Shredder 6 or Shredder
Paderborn?

I've already encountered one snafu. While Shredder 7 installed smoothly, I've
been unable to copy its opening book to my hard-drive. Yes, I've read the
instructions a dozen times. The CD is in my D-drive. I opened Shredder up and
did the following: Menu: "Edit" - "Openings Book" - "Copy tree to hard drive".
However, while everything in my Openings Book menu was lit up as a clickable
option, "Copy tree to hard drive" was not. I've tried different things to try to
get it to work, but have failed. What am I doing wrong? Is this a user error, a
faulty manual, or is there a bug in the CD?

Thanks in advance for your advice and kind assistance.

All the best,

Stephen
